We’re excited to announce that clinicPesa is the newest recipient of the Impact-Linked Finance Fund for Eastern and Southern Africa (ILF ESA) Resilience funding window, funded by the Swiss Re Foundation and managed by iGravity. This strategic funding window supports innovative enterprises operating in different sectors such as healthcare, to increase the resilience of underserved communities across Eastern and Southern Africa.
clinicPesa, based in Kampala, provides uninsured Ugandans . With over 1.2 million registered users and partnerships with 2,612 healthcare facilities, clinicPesa plays a crucial role in improving healthcare access for low-income earners, especially expectant mothers, who struggle to afford essential care.
Addressing the Healthcare Financing Gap
Uganda faces significant challenges in healthcare financing, with only 2% of the population covered by health insurance. Many families rely on out-of-pocket payments for medical treatment, which accounts for 38% of total healthcare expenditure, creating a substantial financial burden, particularly for expectant mothers who often forgo necessary prenatal and postnatal care.
clinicPesa’s platform allows uninsured individuals to save for medical emergencies and access micro-loans to cover healthcare costs. The company partners with over 2,600 healthcare facilities, enabling them to access credit for better quality medical supplies and improving their operational sustainability.
How ILF ESA Resilience Funding Will Empower clinicPesa
With the support of the Impact-Linked Finance Fund for Eastern and Southern Africa (ILF ESA), clinicPesa will further expand its operations:
Creating Sustainable Impact in Healthcare
This funding not only enhances clinicPesa’s growth but also strengthens the overall healthcare ecosystem in Uganda. Through its savings and financing products, clinicPesa empowers uninsured families and mothers-to-be to get financially prepared and afford health and maternal care expenses, thus accessing better quality and timely diagnosis, treatment, and care, ultimately improving health outcomes and increasing their financial resilience against health-related shocks. By creating more reliable revenue streams and improving access and affordability to better quality medical supplies, and the company also improves healthcare facilities’ offering for customers, the quality-of-service provision, and their financial sustainability.
